Get to Know Steven Immel: Community Navigator

*Steven is one of the lead authors of the Wisconsin Programs and Resources for Landowners*

"Through working as a navigator, I was establish to build relationships in and around the

community I live. The most notable accomplishment during my time as a navigator was assisting

the Phelps Volunteer Fire Department with a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant. During this

experience, I met with members of the department to understand their needs and constraints

they operate under. It was rewarding for myself and their department to build a case for why

they should receive funding."

"I also had the pleasure of working with other communities in Wisconsin and the Upper

Peninsula of Michigan. While some communities appeared optimistic and eager to begin

applying for grants, others were skeptical. Had there been more time and opportunity, I feel

participation in the grant opportunities may have increased. Ultimately, this experience

demonstrated to me how many small communities throughout Wisconsin need assistance in the

form of personnel and funding to protect their populations and infrastructure from wildfire and

other climatic events."
